How to choose a honeymoon destination

Updated: Oct 26, 2018

With so many things to do before THE big day, you leave booking your honeymoon to the last minute... Here are some pointers worth considering before saying I do to your dream destination!

1. What is your budget?

Are you paying most of the wedding yourself and did you go a bit loco on the wedding dress? Chances are you need to check your balance first :) I mean this may sound like a no-brainer but you don't want to end up with the picture perfect travel itinerary of your dream destination to only realize the next day you cannot afford it.. Happened to me, FYI!

2. Where do you live?

Ok so huh? Well, I live in Belgium and flying to Asia or South-America is expensive for me, but I'm only a train ride away from Paris... Some people dream of going to Paris while I take this destination for granted! I'm so jealous of people living in Australia because all the beautiful Asian destinations are so close by. So you might dream of a land far away, but there may be options closeby...

3. What do you want to do?

Do you want to spend three weeks on a beach sipping cocktails or do you want an active stay, climbing mountains and trekking in the forest? Do you want to go to foodie heaven (now that your bride to be diet is over) or are you looking for temples, pagodas and stupas?

For us it was important to include culture, nature, active adventures, beaches and snorkeling and a good cocktail every now and then :) We ended up choosing Guatemala and Belize..

Out of all the places I have been, here are:

My fave 3-in-1 destinations: Malaysia, Indonesia, Mexico

My foodie heavens: Thailand, Italy, Bali

My best beaches: Bonaire, Aruba, Koh Tao (Thailand)

4. How do you want to travel?

Meaning.. Will you still have the energy to figure it all out on your own with your Lonely Planet or do you want an agency to organize everything for you? We had an agency make a travel plan and asked for a mix of budget rooms and special locations to keep the budget reasonable. Most prefab wedding arrangements include 5* all in packages but if this is not your thing, you can definitely lower the price. Traveling in group is also less expensive, but also less romantic right? Don't focus on the typical wedding destinations but try to make your wish list destination a bit more special and romantic!

5. Which season?

Going somewhere during hurricane season might definitely ruin your travel plans. Check all the climate info before you make a decision. Some destinations might be cheaper at the beginning or end of the rainy season. You could even consider going during the rainy season if it only rains an hour a day let's say. The perfect moment to go to the spa or enjoy happy hour!

Here are some destinations I visited during the rainy season (I cannot guarantee anything tough ;) )

  1. Thailand (Koh Samui region)

  2. Mexico

  3. Myanmar

  4. Vietnam

  5. Cambodia
